Alya4528Name: Alya Lewis
D.O.B.:

Had she come on the badminton scene anytime other than during the Nigella Saunders era, Alya would probably have reigned supreme. As it is she has won many doubles and mixed events but has not had as much success in singles. Her most recent wins in 2009 were the Open singles and doubles in Racketeers and the Open ladies and mixed doubles in the CBA Tournament. Internationally, she has represented Jamaica numerous times, the most recent being in the 2010 Uber Cup in Peru.

Alya has now taken on the coaching of youngsters. She and her doubles partner Nigella are the coaches of the Avengers Badminton Club which trains on a Saturday at the Constant Spring Golf Club's Badminton Hall.

The Best & nothing less from Haile Selassie High Print E-mail

It's always a pleasure to highlight the excellent achievements of Jamaican youths. This week the spotlight is on the Haile Selassie High school and their top achievers.

Although Haile Selassie has been known for the negative and violent activities in and around the school, TEENage has decided to raise the awareness of the positive that exists.

Recently the TEENage Expression Tour visited the school and we just had to showcase some of the brilliant students at this institution of just over 600.

A big part of their success lies within their sports achievements, especially badminton. They hold the number one place in the badminton all-island schools league and boast two national badminton representatives in Shakira Bailey and Shinell Hyatt. Perhaps the most successful story comes from their past student Shawn Forrester.
